Conformance status

We measure Waxcap and this website against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. It's the standard most accessibility law refers to, for software as well as websites.

Waxcap is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 AA. Most of the app meets the standard, and the parts that fall short are listed under known limitations below.

What Waxcap supports

  • Full keyboard control, using standard macOS shortcut conventions.
  • VoiceOver throughout the app.
  • Editor themes in light and dark, each chosen to meet WCAG 2.1 AA colour contrast.
  • A text-size setting for the sidebar, toolbar and panels, in Settings ▸ Accessibility ▸ UI Text Size. Your writing in the editor has its own size setting.
  • The macOS Reduce Motion setting, and Reduce Transparency through standard macOS materials.

Known limitations

  • VoiceOver reads some decorative icons as "image" before the label next to them.
  • Some section headings in Settings and the side panels are read as plain text, so VoiceOver's heading navigation skips them.
  • VoiceOver describes the monthly heatmap in Stats as a summary (days written and total words) rather than day by day.
  • UI Text Size doesn't change the menu bar or system windows such as Open and Save, which follow macOS.

This website

We built this website to meet WCAG 2.1 AA.

  • Semantic HTML with landmark regions, and every part of the site can be reached with a keyboard.
  • Descriptive alt text on images that carry meaning.
  • Colour contrast that meets WCAG AA.
  • No video or audio that plays by itself, and nothing that flashes.

How we assessed this

We reviewed Waxcap's interface and code against WCAG 2.1 AA and Apple's accessibility guidance in May 2026. This has not been independently audited. This statement was last reviewed on 8 October 2026.
